Sigiriya Lion Rock in a nutshell

Sigiriya lies in the Matale district of Sri Lanka's Central Province. It was the capital of King Kassapa, who ruled from 477 to 495 AD, and the ruins sit around the base of a granite rock and on its summit. The rock is about 180 m high, or 200 m above the surrounding plain, depending on where you measure from.

This guide covers the rock and what you can reach from it: tickets, opening hours, the climb, the frescoes and the Mirror Wall, Pidurangala, the Dambulla cave temple, Minneriya safaris and the Cultural Triangle. It is an independent site, not run by the Central Cultural Fund, a temple, a tourism board or a tour company. Prices are listed as of 2026 and they change.

What to expect on a visit

The short version before you read the detail pages.

Most visitors spend a morning here. You walk through the water gardens, pass the Mirror Wall and the frescoes, reach the lion's paws terrace and climb the last stairs to the summit ruins. Plan 1.5 to 2 hours for the ascent alone, about 1,200 steps. Add the gardens and the museum and it becomes half a day. Sigiriya combines well with the Dambulla cave temple, a jeep safari in Minneriya or a sunrise hike up Pidurangala. For a visit with children or walking limits, read the climb page first, because the summit route is not step-free.

One, two or three days around the rock

Three simple ways to plan, depending on how long you stay.

One morning

Arrive when the counters open at 07:00, climb first and see the museum after it opens at 08:00. Dambulla is about 20 km away, a drive of roughly 30 to 40 minutes, and fits the afternoon. Read about the cave temple and its dress code.

Two days

Spend the first morning on Sigiriya and the second on Pidurangala at sunrise. Add a jeep safari in the afternoon. Elephants gather at Minneriya in the dry season, which is listed as May to October, and a narrower window of July to October with a peak in August and September.

Three days or more

Add the ancient capitals of Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura, or move on to Kandy and the Temple of the Tooth. The Cultural Triangle page has tickets and hours for each stop.

The ticket costs $35, not $25

The current list from 14 October 2026 shows $35 for the full ticket and $20 for the Half Ticket. A flat $25 price from older guides is no longer the Sigiriya rate.

The grounds are listed from 06:30 to 17:30 and the ticket counters from 07:00 to 17:00. A few timetables show 05:00 to 18:30. Do not plan on a sunrise on the rock itself. Pidurangala is the sunrise option.

Sigiriya: frequently asked questions

How much is the Sigiriya ticket for foreigners?

The listed price from 14 October 2026 is $35 for adults and $20 for the Half Ticket. The prices include 18 percent VAT and are paid in rupees at the day's rate. The ticket includes the Sigiriya Museum. See the ticket page.

How long does it take to climb Sigiriya?

Plan 1.5 to 2 hours for the ascent alone, with about 1,200 steps. A round trip with the gardens takes longer, and with the museum it is about half a day. The climb page has the detail.

Can I see the sunrise from Sigiriya?

Do not count on it. Entry before 06:30 is not something to plan around. Pidurangala Rock is the usual sunrise hike and gives a view of Sigiriya itself. See the Pidurangala page.

Can I take photos of the frescoes?

No. Photography is not allowed in the fresco gallery. Look, take your time and keep your camera for the gardens and the summit.

Is Sigiriya worth a day trip from Colombo?

It is possible but long. Colombo is 4 to 5 hours away by car, and listed day trips run 13 to 15 hours. Many visitors stay at least one night near the rock. See tours and where to stay.

Is this the official Sigiriya website?

No. This is an independent travel guide with no link to the Central Cultural Fund, the Department of Archaeology, any temple or any tour operator.
