When to visit Sigiriya

Sigiriya sits in Sri Lanka's dry zone. Temperatures stay high in every month, with daily highs between about 29 and 34 degrees Celsius. What changes through the year is the rain, and with it the state of the stone steps, the views and the road to the safari parks.

Two options work well for most visitors. January to March is a compromise of warmth and moderate rain. June to September is a second window and the driest stretch of the year. Both depend on the weather of the day, so wet steps and poor visibility remain possible at any time.

The monsoon seasons

Sri Lanka's weather follows four phases. Do not copy the calendar of the south-west coast onto Sigiriya.

North-east monsoon, December to February

This phase overlaps with the wettest months in the table, December in particular. January and February are much drier, with 90 and 59 mm in the averages.

First inter-monsoon, March to April

The hottest weeks of the year, with highs around 34 degrees. April shows a rise in rain, 175 mm in the averages.

South-west monsoon, May to September

The south-west monsoon is strongest on the other side of the island. At Sigiriya, June to August are the driest months in the averages.

Second inter-monsoon, October to November

October and November bring the highest monthly rainfall in the table, 244 and 262 mm. Expect wet steps and fewer clear views.

What the season means on site

Heat, stone steps, water and wildlife.

Heat on the climb

The rock has about 1,200 steps, and heat is a real risk for exertion. Go in the early morning or late afternoon, when it is cooler. That is advice for every month, not only the hot ones. Climbing Sigiriya →

Wet stone

After rain the steps can be slippery. Wear shoes with grip and take your time on the stairs, especially on the iron stairways near the top.

The water gardens

Some fountains in the water gardens work in the rainy season. They do not run on every day, and nothing promises flowing water on your visit.

Elephants at Minneriya

The national park around the reservoir is known for elephant gatherings. A popular window runs from May to October, and another view narrows it to July to October with a peak in August and September. When rain returns, the herds spread out again. Minneriya safari →

Crowds

No month guarantees an empty site. The early morning is the quieter hour of the day in any season, and the opening times decide what you can do. Opening hours →

Best time to visit Sigiriya: frequently asked questions

What is the best month to visit Sigiriya?

January to March is a good compromise of warmth and moderate rain, and June to September is a second option. No month removes the risk of heat or wet steps.

Which months are the wettest?

October, November and December, with 244, 262 and 237 mm in the long-term averages. April also rises, with 175 mm.

Is Sigiriya too hot to climb?

Highs stay between about 29 and 34 degrees through the year. The climb is easier in the early morning or late afternoon, and you should carry water and sun protection in any month.

When can I see elephants near Sigiriya?

The gathering at Minneriya is popular from May to October, with a narrower window of July to October and a peak in August and September. The numbers are never guaranteed, and the park used can change.

Does the monsoon close the rock?

Rain makes the steps slippery and views less clear, but a wet month alone does not close the site. Check the current situation before you travel.
