Pidurangala in short
Pidurangala is a rock and temple site about 21 km from Dambulla and close to Sigiriya. You climb it for the view of Sigiriya from the outside. It is a sunrise spot, and the climb has a medium level of difficulty. Entry is paid, there are toilets, and the site is not accessible for people with disabilities.
Pidurangala does not replace Sigiriya. It gives you the view of the Lion Rock, but not its palace ruins or its fresco gallery.

The climb and the temple
What the path is like.
The path
Plan 30 to 45 minutes up and 20 to 30 minutes down. The last part goes over large boulders, and you need your hands. There are no continuous railings. Take your time on the way down.
The temple area
The route passes a Buddhist temple area. Cover your shoulders and knees, and take your shoes off in the temple area. Put suitable shoes back on for the rocky path. The site includes a reclining Buddha. Behave with respect.
Entry and hours
Foreign adults pay LKR 1,000 in cash at the foot of the rock (2026). The ticket window is open roughly from 05:00 to 18:00 every day. Check the price and the hours at the gate, and carry cash.
Planning a sunrise visit
Dark path, early start.
Light and transport
Bring a headlamp, and arrange a local transfer. Do not walk to the site on unlit country roads in the dark. Elephants can be near the roads in the morning and in the evening.
Sunrise time
There is no fixed time all year. In October the sunrise is around 05:55 as a rough guide. Check the time for your date and add the climb time.
Works on the site
A tourism project for Dambulla and Sigiriya began in September 2026 and includes work at Pidurangala. Conditions on the path and at the entrance can change.

Safety and respect on the rock
Points for the dark and for the temple.
The boulder section
There are no continuous railings. Use your hands, test each hold and let faster people pass. A dark start makes this part harder, so wait for light if you feel unsure.
Other hikers
Be considerate of other hikers at sunrise, and do not climb out to the edge for a better view.
Behaviour at the temple
This is a place of worship as well as a viewpoint. Keep your voice low, do not pose on or in front of statues and follow any signs.
Combining Pidurangala with Sigiriya
Two rocks, one or two mornings.
Pidurangala first, Sigiriya later
One option is Pidurangala at sunrise and Sigiriya afterwards. Sigiriya is listed as open from 06:30 and its ticket counters from 07:00, so a sunrise hike leaves time for the main site the same morning. The heat builds quickly, though, so you may prefer to do Sigiriya on a second day or in the late afternoon.
What it costs
Pidurangala is LKR 1,000 for foreign adults and Sigiriya is $35 for a full ticket (2026). The two are separate tickets from separate places.
Where to sleep
The village south and west of the rock has guesthouses, homestays and small hotels, and it suits early starts. Kibissa and the roads around it are about 10 to 20 minutes by car from the rock, and Habarana is 30 to 40 minutes away. See where to stay.
What to pack
A headlamp for a sunrise start, water, a layer for the top, and shoes with grip for the boulders. Keep something to cover your shoulders and knees for the temple.
