Colombo to Sigiriya: the options
Sigiriya lies in the Matale district in the Central Province, in the middle of the island. The rock rises from flat forest land, and the nearest larger town is Dambulla. From Colombo you plan a half day of travel, whichever way you go.
A private car with a driver is the simplest choice. It runs door to door, it can stop on the way and it brings you to the ticket counter early. The bus is cheaper but needs a change. The train does not reach Sigiriya itself: Habarana has a rail connection, and you finish the trip by road.
All times below are planning values. Traffic out of Colombo, the start point and the weather can add an hour or more.

Routes compared
Travel times and costs as planning values for 2026. Fares and timetables change, so confirm them before you go.
| Route | Time | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Colombo by car | 4 to 5 hours | Private car or taxi with driver. Colombo city and the airport are different starting points. |
| Airport (CMB) by car | 4 hours or more | About 150 km. The time depends on the terminal, traffic and your final address. |
| Colombo by bus | โ | Bastian Mawatha or Pettah bus station to Dambulla, then a local bus to Sigiriya. |
| Dambulla to Sigiriya by bus | 45 to 60 minutes | Local bus, roughly LKR 100. Buses are not timed to each other, so allow waiting time. |
| By train | โ | Habarana is the rail connection. The last stretch to Sigiriya is by road. |
| Kandy by car | 2 to 3 hours | Via Matale and Dambulla. Operators plan 2 to 2.5 hours, distances range from about 90 to 125 km. |

By car or private driver
The easiest way to reach the rock before the heat.
From Colombo
Plan 4 to 5 hours one way. A private Sigiriya and Dambulla day tour from Colombo is listed with a 5 a.m. pickup and a total length of 13 to 15 hours. The vehicle price for the return trip in 2026 is LKR 38,000 for a sedan with up to 3 people and LKR 43,000 for an SUV with up to 5 people. A van for 6 to 8 people is LKR 53,000 and a large van for 9 to 12 people LKR 63,000. These are prices per vehicle, not per person. Entry tickets and meals are not included.
From the airport
If you land at Colombo airport, ask your driver or hotel for the actual distance and time from your terminal. Do not plan to climb the rock on the day of a long flight.
Day trips are long
A day tour from Colombo spends most of its hours on the road. If the rock is the main goal, sleeping in the area gives you the early hours at the site. Where to stay โ
By bus and train
Cheap, slow and flexible.
Bus via Dambulla
Take a bus from the Bastian Mawatha or Pettah station in Colombo to Dambulla. Dambulla has onward bus connections, including to Kandy. From there a local bus goes to Sigiriya in roughly 45 to 60 minutes. A tuk-tuk or taxi is the alternative when the last bus has gone.
Train to Habarana
Habarana is the stop with a rail connection and a base for safari trips. From there, Sigiriya is a 30 to 40 minute drive by road, and no train runs to the rock. Check the current timetable and seat reservation before you go, as the train times you find online may be old.
Luggage and timing
With a lot of luggage, a private car costs more but removes the change at Dambulla.
From Kandy to Sigiriya
Kandy is the usual second base, and the road to Sigiriya runs north through Matale and Dambulla.
By car, operators plan 2 to 2.5 hours, and other estimates reach 3 hours. The distance is given as roughly 90 to 125 km depending on the start point and route. One-way taxi quotes from Kandy range from LKR 10,500 to LKR 18,000, so agree the price and the vehicle before you set off.
By bus you change in Dambulla, as from Colombo. A Kandy day tour with Sigiriya, Dambulla and a jeep safari is listed as 10 hours long, with a recommended pickup at 6:30 a.m. or earlier. Such a day is full, so it leaves little time for the climb itself.
Kandy has its own sights. The Temple of the Tooth and the other stops of the region are covered in the cultural triangle guide.

On arrival: parking, nights and safety
Details that matter once you are near the rock.
Parking and access roads
A tourism development project for the Dambulla and Sigiriya area started on 20 September 2026. It includes new parking areas, so access and parking can change from week to week. A free car park is not guaranteed. Ask your driver or accommodation what applies on your day.
Elephants near the roads
Wild elephants can appear on country roads around Sigiriya, mostly in the morning and evening. Do not walk unlit roads before sunrise. Arrange a driver or tuk-tuk for dark hours.
Plan the first hours
The site is open from 6:30 a.m. and the ticket counters from 7:00 a.m., so reaching the gate early is the main benefit of a nearby stay. Opening hours โ

Getting to Sigiriya: frequently asked questions
How long does it take to get from Colombo to Sigiriya?
Plan 4 to 5 hours by car. From the airport it is about 150 km, which usually takes 4 hours or more. By bus the trip takes longer because you change in Dambulla.
Is there a train to Sigiriya?
No train runs to the rock. Habarana has a rail connection, and you continue by road. It is a 30 to 40 minute drive from there. Check the current timetable before you plan around a train.
How do I get to Sigiriya from Dambulla?
A local bus takes roughly 45 to 60 minutes and costs around LKR 100. Buses are not timed to each other, so a taxi or tuk-tuk is the backup. The Dambulla cave temple is about 20 km from Sigiriya and a 30 to 40 minute drive.
Can I visit Sigiriya as a day trip from Colombo?
It is possible but long. A listed private day tour starts at 5 a.m. and runs 13 to 15 hours. Most of that is driving, so a night closer to the rock gives you a better start.
Is the trip from Kandy easier?
It is shorter, at 2 to 2.5 hours by car as operators plan it. The route runs through Matale and Dambulla. Agree the taxi price before you leave, as quotes differ.
