What the Sigiriya climb involves

The way up leads over stone and brick steps, stairs cut into the rock and steel staircases fixed to the rock face. There are spiral stairs at the fresco gallery and a last steel staircase above the lion paws. The step count is about 1,200. Treat that as an approximation.

The ascent alone takes 1.5 to 2 hours. A longer figure of 1.5 to 3 hours covers the way up and down together, and with the museum and the gardens you should plan half a day. Always check which of these a time estimate refers to.

The route in stages

From the gardens to the summit ruins.

Gardens and approach

You walk through the water, boulder and terrace gardens first. This part takes a while on its own. The ticket counter is near the museum at the western entrance.

Stairs up the rock

The steps begin at the foot of the rock. This is the long, steady part of the ascent.

Fresco gallery and Mirror Wall

Spiral stairs lead up to the gallery with the paintings. Photography is not allowed there. The page on the frescoes explains what you see.

Lion paws terrace

The giant paws are what remains of the brick lion whose mouth was the way into the upper stairs. This is also where stinging insects are a known problem, so read the safety section below before you go.

Summit

A steel staircase leads up from the paws. At the top you find mostly foundations and water basins of the palace. The view over the forest and the plain is wide.

When to start and how to handle the heat

Early or late is the rule.

Early morning or late afternoon

The heritage authority recommends the early morning or the late afternoon because temperatures are lower. That is a recommendation, not a guarantee of cool air. The site is listed as open from 06:30 to 17:30, and the ticket counters from 07:00 to 17:00.

Do not start late

Counters close at 17:00, so do not plan to start the ascent near closing time. Do not count on a climb before sunrise either, because early access is not something to plan around. If you want a sunrise, go to Pidurangala.

What to bring

Water, sun protection and shoes with good grip. Steps can be slippery when wet. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke happen on this climb, and many visitors underestimate it. Go at a slow pace and rest often.

A realistic timetable for the morning

One way to fit the rock, the gardens and the museum into half a day.

Around 07:00

Buy your ticket when the counters open and walk through the gardens. The museum does not open until 08:00, so leave it for after the climb.

Next 1.5 to 2 hours

Climb at an easy pace. Stop at the fresco gallery and again at the lion paws. If it is crowded on the stairs, wait rather than push.

Summit and way down

Give yourself time at the top to cool down and drink before you descend. The way down is also stairs, and tired legs make it slower than you expect.

Museum and gardens

The museum is included in the full ticket and is open from 08:00 to 17:00. It is worth a stop after the climb.

Day trips from far away

Day trips from Colombo list pickups around 05:00 and 13 to 15 hours in total, mostly in the car. From Kandy, a combined trip with the rock, Dambulla and a safari lists 10 hours with pickup at 06:30 or earlier. See the tours page and getting there.

Wasps and other safety points

Know the risk before you reach the upper stairs.

Stinging insects

Attacks by stinging insects recur at the lion paws terrace and on the upper stairs. The usual description is wasps. A shelter exists, but at peak times it may be too small for everyone, and a place there is not guaranteed.

What to do

Stay calm and do not swat at the insects. Go to the shelter when staff tell you to. Do not play loud music or shout on the upper stairs. Follow all instructions from site staff about stinging insects and wild elephants.

Elephants around the site

Dangerous elephant encounters are possible around the site in the morning and in the evening. Do not walk along unlit country roads before sunrise. Arrange a ride instead.

Drones and filming

Filming, including with a drone, needs written permission from the heritage authority beforehand.

Access and families

The route to the summit is stairs all the way and not step-free. Do not assume the gardens and the museum are fully wheelchair accessible. Foreign children under 6 enter free with proof of age, and children from 6 to 12 pay the half ticket of $20 (2026).

Climbing Sigiriya: frequently asked questions

How many steps are there at Sigiriya?

About 1,200. This is an approximate figure, not an exact count. The route mixes stone and brick steps with steel stairs fixed to the rock.

How long does it take to climb Sigiriya?

The ascent takes 1.5 to 2 hours. Up and down together can take 1.5 to 3 hours depending on pace and crowds. With the museum and the gardens, plan half a day.

Is the climb dangerous?

Most visitors manage it, but the heat, the stairs and the stinging insects near the top are real risks. Bring water, wear shoes with grip and follow staff instructions.

Can I climb Sigiriya at sunrise?

Do not count on it. The site is listed as open from 06:30 to 17:30, and early access before sunrise is not something you can rely on. Pidurangala is the usual sunrise option.

Can I climb with small children or limited mobility?

The summit route is stairs only. Children under 6 enter free with proof of age. If you cannot manage long stair climbs, the gardens and the museum below the rock are an alternative, but do not assume they are fully step-free.
