Sigiriya opening hours at a glance
The grounds are listed as open every day from 06:30 to 17:30, with no weekly closing day. The ticket counters work from 07:00 to 17:00. A few timetables show earlier and later times, from 05:00 to 18:30. Do not rely on that. Plan your day around the counter hours.
The museum is open from 08:00 to 17:00. If you climb early, the museum is still closed when you come down, so decide whether to see it before or after the rock. The ticket covers both.

First entry, last entry and the sunrise
What the hours mean in practice.
First entry
Count on 07:00, when the counters open. Entry to the rock before sunrise is not something to promise yourself. If you want to be on a summit at dawn, go to Pidurangala instead.
Pidurangala sunrise →Last entry
The counters close at 17:00. The grounds close at 17:30, but that does not mean you can start the climb until then. The ascent alone takes 1.5 to 2 hours, so a late start leaves no margin. Start well before the counters close.
The museum
The museum is open from 08:00 to 17:00. An early rock visit does not mean the museum is open when you finish. Plan it for the end of the day or after a break.
Public holidays
Temples and sites in Sri Lanka can change their hours for religious days. Check the current timetable before you go, especially around full moon days.

When to go: heat and crowds
Early morning and late afternoon are the cooler options.
| Time of day | What it offers | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| 07:00 to 09:00 | Lower temperatures, first entry | Counters open at 07:00, the museum at 08:00 |
| Midday | Time for the museum and the gardens | The hottest part of the day, little shade on the stairs |
| Late afternoon | Lower temperatures again | Counters close at 17:00, grounds at 17:30 |
The Central Cultural Fund suggests early morning or late afternoon because of lower temperatures. That is a recommendation, not a guarantee of cool weather. There are no figures for queue times or visitor numbers by day, so do not plan around a day that is supposedly empty. Bring water and sun protection either way. The climb page covers heat and the stinging insects near the top.
Three sample days
Built from the hours above. Adjust them to your pickup and the weather.
Rock first, museum second
Be at the counter at 07:00, buy the ticket and start the climb. The ascent takes 1.5 to 2 hours, then allow time for the way down. Walk through the gardens on the descent, and enter the museum after 08:00 when you are back at ground level.
Pidurangala at dawn, Sigiriya later
Hike Pidurangala for the sunrise, which takes 30 to 45 minutes up with a headlamp. Return to your hotel for breakfast. Visit Sigiriya in the late afternoon, and make sure you start the climb well before the counters close at 17:00.
Safari day
A jeep safari in the morning window runs about 06:00 to 10:00. Rest at midday and go to Sigiriya in the late afternoon only if you can still climb in the heat that remains. Otherwise, keep Sigiriya for the next morning.

Sigiriya opening hours: frequently asked questions
What time does Sigiriya open?
The grounds are listed from 06:30 and the ticket counters from 07:00. Some timetables show 05:00. Plan for 07:00 unless you have confirmation of an earlier entry.
What time does Sigiriya close?
The grounds are listed until 17:30, and the ticket counters close at 17:00. Start the climb long before that, because the ascent takes 1.5 to 2 hours.
Is Sigiriya open every day?
The hours are listed daily, with no regular weekly closing day. Special closures can happen, so check the current timetable before you go.
Can I watch the sunrise from Sigiriya?
Do not plan on it. Pidurangala Rock is described for sunrise and gives a view of Sigiriya. Bring a headlamp and arrange a transfer, because the road in the dark is not a good walk.
When is the museum open?
From 08:00 to 17:00. It is part of the rock ticket, and it can be entered on its own for $6.
How early should I be at the counter?
On a day with a full climb, be there when the counters open at 07:00. Queues are not predictable, so allow some time to buy the ticket before you start walking.
What is the best time to visit?
Early morning or late afternoon, for the lower temperatures. The seasons are on the best time page.
