Minneriya safari at a glance
Minneriya National Park has been a national park since 1997. Its reservoir shrinks in the dry months and leaves grassland exposed at the edge. Elephants come to graze and drink there, and the large groups that form are known as the gathering. The water level decides how good the season is, so there is no fixed date.
Sri Lanka Tourism lists May to October as the popular time. Some guides narrow it to July to October with a peak in August and September. When rain starts, the elephants spread out again. Treat any sighting as likely in season, not guaranteed, and do not trust anyone who promises a number of animals.
Most safaris start from Sigiriya, Habarana or Dambulla. This site is an independent guide and does not run safaris or issue permits.

Minneriya, Kaudulla and Hurulu compared
Operators choose the park by where the elephants are, so the park can change from week to week.
| Park | Private jeep, example 2026 | Foreign adult park entry | Child 5 to 11 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minneriya | LKR 14,000 to LKR 19,000 | $25 | $12.50 |
| Kaudulla | LKR 17,000 to LKR 20,000 | $25 | $12.50 |
| Hurulu | LKR 14,000 to LKR 19,000 | $10 | $5 |
The lower jeep price in each row is for a Mahindra, the higher for a Toyota Hilux. The price is per jeep, not per person, and covers up to 6 people, the driver, fuel and pickup in Habarana or Minneriya. Park entry is extra. Pickup in Sigiriya costs extra. Other listings quote lower amounts, such as LKR 8,000 to LKR 12,000 for a jeep and $15 to $20 for entry, so ask for an all-in price before you agree.

Choosing a park and planning the day
What to ask and when to go.
Minneriya
The best known of the three and the one most people mean when they say the gathering. It is managed by the Department of Wildlife Conservation, as is Kaudulla. Permits are handled through an online portal that the department runs.
Kaudulla
A second park that operators use, depending on where elephants are seen. In some weeks it is the better choice, and the jeep is a little dearer. Ask your driver which park has more animals on your day.
Hurulu
Hurulu Eco Park falls under the Forest Department, not the wildlife department, so it is not part of Minneriya National Park. It was closed to visitors from 9 to 20 September 2026 because of fire risk, and a separate reopening date was to be announced. Do not assume it is open. Check with your operator before you plan around it.
Morning or afternoon
Safaris run in two windows, 06:00โ10:00 and 14:00โ18:00. A common plan is the Lion Rock at opening time, then lunch and rest, then an afternoon safari. Read the climbing guide before you commit to both in one day, as the climb is hot and tiring.
Group or private
A private jeep costs the same for one person or six, so it suits families and small groups. Shared safaris split the cost between guests. Check which entry fees are included in the price.
Staying nearby
Habarana is a hub for safaris, about 30 to 40 minutes from Sigiriya. Staying in the Sigiriya area also works, since many drivers collect guests there. See where to stay for the areas.
Safety and behavior in the park
Elephants are wild animals.
Elephants can attack people. Follow the instructions of your driver and tracker at all times. Stay in the jeep, keep your voice down and do not throw food or make sudden noise. Keep a respectful distance, rely on your guide and stay well back from any calf.
Outside the parks, elephants also cross roads around Sigiriya, mostly in the early morning and evening. Do not walk along unlit country roads before sunrise, and arrange transport for early starts.
Yala National Park in the south is a separate destination and has its own guide.

Minneriya safari: frequently asked questions
When is the best time for the Minneriya elephant gathering?
May to October is the popular window, with July to October and a peak in August and September named by some guides. Water levels set the pace each year, and rain scatters the herds. No exact dates can be promised.
How much does a Minneriya safari cost?
One example lists a private jeep at LKR 14,000 to LKR 19,000 for Minneriya, for up to 6 people, plus $25 park entry per foreign adult and $12.50 per child aged 5 to 11. Other listings quote lower numbers. Ask for the all-in price.
Is Hurulu open?
Hurulu closed from 9 to 20 September 2026 because of fire risk, and a reopening date was to be announced separately. Check with your operator before you plan around it.
Do I need to book a safari in advance?
A permit system runs online through the wildlife department. Ask your operator whether the permit is included in the price. In peak season it is sensible to arrange your jeep ahead.
Should I choose a morning or an afternoon safari?
Both run daily, from 06:00 to 10:00 and from 14:00 to 18:00. The afternoon fits well after a morning at the Lion Rock. Ask your driver which window suits the park on your day.
Is it safe?
Elephants can attack people. Stay in the jeep, follow your guide and keep your distance from calves.
